The Full Answer
SOS is the international Morse Code distress signal. It does not stand for anything and is not an abbreviation.
The SOS distress signal is a continuous sequence of three dots, three dashes and three dots. In international Morse Code, three dots form the letter S and three dashes make the letter O, so SOS became an easy way to remember the sequence.
SOS was designed to be used to request immediate help with or rescue from a dire situation.
In modern usage, SOS is used to add drama to a situation you consider to be bad…
or to a request for assistance with something.
